More About the Devon Rex
Brief History Many people ask about how the Devon Rex got their name. The Devon Rex breed was discovered in a tin mine in Devonshire England in the early 1960's by Ms. Beryl Cox. At that time she knew this breed was different because of it's curly hair. The first part of the name Devon comes from Devonshire, England. The second part, Rex, is a description of their coat which is "rexed" meaning curly. All Devons descend from Kirlee, the male that Ms. Cox discovered.
Hypo-Allergenic? Some people are drawn to Devons because they have been told they are good for people with allergies. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS TRUE! Sometimes Devons can be better tolerated with those with asthma or allergies, however, ever individual is different and at this point there is no "allergy free" kitty. It is important that you work closely with a reputable breeder before bringing a Devon into a home that has allergy issues. This is better for the well being of the kitty and the new owners.
Personality Traits Besides having strikingly large ears and curly hair, Devons are unique in other ways. One of the most enjoyable features of the Devon are their unique personalities. While all individual cats have their own personalities, overall, the Devon breed tends to be a breed of a very social nature. When asked about their personality, it's often easier to tell stories rather than to try to explain it with words. Devons like to be a part of their human's everyday activities. They like to "help" sort mail, fold clothes and even take showers with their humans from time-to-time. If someone is seeking a cat that will be content to do it's own thing and just act pretty, a Devon might not be the right choice for them. We also really encourage prospective adopters to really think about the commitment of adopting a Devon before bringing one home. Devons have a life span of upwards of 10 years and it's important to ask yourself where you plan on being in 10-20 years. Their extremely social nature makes them very sensitive to life changing events that effects how much love and affection they receive.
